Happy Earth Day South Africa

Today, 22 April, the world is celebrating Earth Day. With climate change and the weather becoming more and more unpredictable, days like today serve as a reminder to make better choices when it comes to environmental issues. Recently, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) experienced heavy rainfalls that led to flooding and loss of life and property for some people. It is now becoming a norm that when there is rain for 3 days an more, then floods alerts are received. Last year, in Tongaat, a devastating tornado ravaged through it, and the local community was negatively affected, with electricity issues, loss of property and infrastructure. A tornado is such a rare occurrence in South Africa, and this further shows the effects of global climate change. It is important during Earth Day to educate people about climate change and ways we can ensure sustainability.

And as businesses, we can draft policies and have processes changed to ensure the impact on the environment is reduced. Businesses like Nude Foods are great examples of how businesses can help with environmental issues. Nude Foods SA is a plastic free grocery store, they only use glass and cud boards to pack their products. All their packaging is 110% recyclable.

Other ways as South Africans can contribute to Earth day is by participating in initiatives like planting trees, opening community gardens and participating in local cleanups. As Healing food SA, we are also committed into following sustainable ways of growing our micro greens and veggies, like companion planting so we can reduce the use of insecticides. Companion planting is a system of growing plants that enhance each others growth and help protect each other against pests.

There are so many ways we as South Africans and citizens of the world can contribute to reducing climate change, so our kids can have a place to live in the future. So today, as we celebrate Earth Day, I hope you can be inspired to find ways you can make a contribution as well - no matter how small, it does make a difference. Happy Earth Day

With love,

Healing Foods SA Team
