Welcome to Healing Foods SA!

Welcome to the world of Superfoods. Here we talk about all things Plant-Based nutrition. How to source these great products and how to change your diet so you can improve your overall health and vitality...

Hello, beautiful people of the world:) My name is Mbali, am 33 years old and I was born and raised in Durban South Africa. I started this blog because I wanted to educate people about the importance of eating plant-based foods and how that can positively affect your overall well-being. Some of these foods such as microgreens people can grow themselves and therefore can contribute to food security. I was introduced to malnutrition and terms like food security whilst doing my Postgraduate diploma in Food security at the University of KwaZulu Natal. Food security is having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

In South Africa, most household homes are unable to adequately meet the nutritional needs of their children. Most kids consider junk food as filling and healthy food. I remember whilst I was growing up, my grandmother bought most items in bulk and consisted mostly of foods that were High in Carbohydrates or Starch because those foods were thought to be dense, meaning the food would "last" long in our bellies. Meaning, we would be full for longer periods of time and therefore save food. I grew up a very sickly child, I know at that time that was the best they could do, but I look back now and see how this could have been affected by my diet.

When was older, I continued with my poor eating habits (high-carb diet). I gained a lot of weight. I was clinically obese. When I turned 30 years almost 3 years ago, I started experiencing anxiety attacks, I sank deep into depression. My life started spiraling out of control, with constant joint pain, heart palpitations, and fear. I was living in fear that my body would give in any minute, then I started drinking Aspirin every day because I thought I was preventing a heart condition. I was on every painkiller and multivitamin you could think of. Until, all those vitamins and painkillers could numb the pain anymore, and I then developed insomnia. There was a lot that was happening, but one day I decided to change my life. and one of the ways I did that, was by changing the way I eat or the food I consume. In the upcoming posts, I will let you know about all the things you can do yourself to heal the body or improve your health in a natural way.

Just so you guys know I am not a dietician or an expert in plant based diet, but I am willing to learn and I want to share that knowledge with you the reader so you can be inspired to make a positive change in your life as well. When I started out I followed Dr. Sebi's diet plan, and only ate foods on that list. I feel like that is a good start. (Click here if you want the list). I also observe fasts from time to time, just so I can completely detox my body and I really feel great now.

So if you have questions on going plant-based, especially here in South Africa where the cost of living is now so high, feel free to contact me, I will share tips on how I do it.
