As a vegetarian, one of my main health concerns was whether I am getting all the minerals and vitamins from my diet. I am always looking for foods that can boost my immunity, make my skin glow and nourish me. I remember the vegetarians and vegan influencers I followed, although they vouched by their lifestyle, I would secretly judge them and think to my self, their skin look dull or they look tired as if they missing some nutrients.
And for long time, I was resistance to going full plant based because of this. Here in Africa and especially as an African woman, we appreciate looking chubby, with hips and flat stomach, plus the skin must glow, so the melanin pops out. So for me having a balanced meal that will help me feel good and my best self was non-negotiable.I also don’t want to take too many supplements (I do take some) that why I had to find natural plant based ways to keep myself nourished and healthy.
Micro greens are a great source of nourishment. Micro greens are young edible seedlings of vegetables and herbs. They are harvested at 7 to 14 days after sowing, they can be used as garnish for salads, soups, added to smoothies or added to sandwiches.

At Healing Foods SA, we also produce and supply various types of micro greens. Below is a list of my top 5 that I always add to my diet.
Arugula micro greens - fully grown arugula is popularly used as one of the main ingredients in salads all over the world. Arugula is my favorite to add to my detox salad as it has many benefits. It is rich in vitamins and minerals that are said to aid in digestion, support heart health, boost immunity and are even said to help fight cancer. As a micro green it contains a concentrated boost of nutrients and minerals, exceeding those found in mature arugula. And this is my favorite micro green to eat.
Beetroot micro greens - My second favorite, as a woman over 35 years old, I have started getting concerned about aging gracefully, and I love beets micro greens because they have a compound called Lutein, which is an antioxidant which reduces inflammation and helps prevent age-related macular degeneration. In simpler terms, beets is wonderful for your skin,
Wheat grass - third on my is, this micro green is also known as a super-food. Super-foods is a term used for foods with superior nutritional content when compared to other foods, this helps with naturally healing your body. That is why it is my number 3 micro green, it is said to be packed with nutrients and it also may help remove stored toxins in your body. Anything that will naturally cleanse me, sign me up!
Radish micro greens - they made the list because they are relatively very easy to grow on your own, and they are very tasty. It looks good as a garnish and people love me. But they too are packed with nutrients, rich in antioxidants, vitamins and have many amazing benefits
Broccoli sprouts - Last on my list of micro greens to add to your diet today, is broccoli sprouts, I was diagnosed with G.E.R.D. (and suffer from chronic acid re flux and ulcers), and broccoli is rich in antioxidants that promote gut health. They help reduce imflammation.
